New Haven Line Catenary and Bridge Improvements Require Timetable Changes Effective August 30, 2010
The New Haven Line's schedule change effective on Monday, August 30 is being initiated to accommodate a major multi-year Connecticut Department of Transportation (ConnDOT) catenary and bridge improvement project on the New Haven Line.
The work involves the replacement of the 100-year old overhead catenary wires that supply power to the trains as well as the reconstruction of 5 rail bridges in this critical section of the New Haven Line.
The schedule change will affect most peak-hour trains on the New Haven Line. Two of four tracks will be continually out of service between Southport and Bridgeport, limiting track capacity.
As a result, many peak-hour New Haven Line trains (including some modification to Shore Line East trains) will operate up to 6 minutes earlier or up to 14 minutes later. Also, station stops made by some trains will change.
There will also be track outages that will require you to board trains from temporary platforms, and occasionally from opposite-side platforms.
Metro-North and ConnDOT worked together in an effort to limit the project’s impacts on providing reliable train service. For more information, visit www.mta.info/mnr

Commuter Tax Benefit – Increased Tax Benefits Continued Through 2010
The Commuter Tax Benefit program, as implemented in Connecticut and promoted by the Connecticut Department of Transportation, allows commuters the opportunity to pay for a portion of their commuting expenses with pre-tax dollars. This results in a tax savings for Connecticut commuters and a reduced taxable payroll for Connecticut employers. Through December 31, 2010, federal tax law allows commuters to set aside up to $230 per month to pay for mass transit and vanpool fares, plus up to $230 per month for qualified parking. (Qualified parking is parking at or near an employer's worksite, or at a facility from which an employee commutes via transit, vanpool or carpool.) Commuter tax incentive programs are making a difference to thousands of employees throughout the state. In addition to tax savings, participants enjoy a less stressful commute and take satisfaction in knowing they are helping relieve congestion and reduce the environmental impact of driving alone to work. The program is easy to set up and use and must be implemented by employers before employees can use it. For more information, visit www.commutertaxbenefit.org.
